Gold Coast Highlights
Overview
The Gold Coast packs 70km of surf beaches, a rainforest hinterland and Australia's biggest theme parks into one easy day. Your private driver shapes the pace around you — sunrise at Surfers, koalas at Currumbin, then cool mountain air at Tamborine.
Best for: First-timers, families, beach + wildlife lovers
Where you'll go
Your driver adapts the route on the day — stops can flex to suit your pace and interests.
1
Surfers Paradise
The iconic skyline-meets-beach strip — espresso, sand and a photo at the foreshore.
About this stop
Surfers Paradise is the Gold Coast's signature beachfront, where a wall of high-rise towers stands directly behind a wide, patrolled surf beach. What began as a 1920s seaside resort is now Australia's best-known holiday strip, anchored by Cavill Avenue and the foreshore promenade.
Make the most of it
Come first thing, before the day-trip crowds arrive — morning light is kindest on the towers and parking is painless for your driver. Sixty minutes is enough: coffee on Cavill Avenue, feet in the sand, the SURFERS PARADISE sign photo, then move on. Skip the arcades and chain shops; the beach and skyline are the show.
Why it's worth it
Standing on the sand with fifty storeys of glass at your back is the Gold Coast moment — the photo everyone wants, and the burst of energy that sets up the rest of the day.
2
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
Hand-feed rainbow lorikeets and meet koalas, kangaroos and crocs.
About this stop
Currumbin began in 1947 when flower-grower Alex Griffiths started feeding the wild rainbow lorikeets raiding his blooms; it has since grown into a National Trust heritage-listed sanctuary. Today it holds one of Queensland's best-loved collections of koalas, kangaroos, crocodiles and native birds in a bushland setting.
Make the most of it
Time your visit around the wild lorikeet feedings, held morning and late afternoon — free, gloriously chaotic, and the best thing in the park. With 90 minutes, prioritise the lorikeets, the koala photo (book ahead; sessions sell out) and the kangaroo paddock, and let the miniature train save your legs between zones. The far enclosures are the ones to drop when time is short.
Why it's worth it
Hand-feeding a swirl of wild rainbow lorikeets — birds that choose to come — feels genuinely different from any zoo, and the koala cuddle photo is the souvenir of the trip.
3
Tamborine Mountain
Rainforest walks, the Skywalk, wineries and the Gallery Walk village.
About this stop
Tamborine Mountain is a green plateau in the Gold Coast hinterland whose Witches Falls section became Queensland's first national park in 1908. The mountain village mixes subtropical rainforest walks with the Gallery Walk strip of craft shops, fudge makers, distilleries and cool-climate wineries.
Make the most of it
Arrive around midday, when the mountain air takes the edge off the coastal heat, and treat this as lunch territory — the wineries and Gallery Walk cafes are the hinterland's best. With 90 minutes, pick one rainforest hit (the Curtis Falls track or the paid Skywalk canopy bridge) plus a stroll of Gallery Walk; don't try to do both walks. Wear proper shoes — the rainforest paths stay damp under the canopy.
Why it's worth it
One winding climb swaps surf for cool rainforest — a complete change of world, with green valleys below and the coastline you just left shimmering in the distance.
4
Burleigh Heads
A laid-back headland with the day's best beach views to finish.
About this stop
Burleigh Heads pairs one of Australia's most famous point breaks with a basalt headland protected as Burleigh Head National Park, its dark rocks the remains of ancient lava flows. The pine-lined hill above the beach is a Gold Coast institution for sunset picnics and watching surfers work the point.
Make the most of it
Save Burleigh for late afternoon — the low sun lights the Surfers skyline across the bay and the headland grass fills with locals, which is exactly the scene you want. Walk at least the first stretch of the oceanview track around the national park for the best photo angles, then finish with fish and chips or a James Street dinner. Bring a layer; the headland catches the sea breeze.
Why it's worth it
From the headland you get the day's best view — surfers on the point, the whole sweep of beach, and the Surfers Paradise towers glowing across the water as the light drops.
